Lynbrook Police Warns Residents of Phone Scam

Several elderly residents in Lynbrook were recently the victims of a telephone scam, according to police.

 

The sent out a press release Wednesday warning residents of a phone scam that recently victimized several elderly Lynbrook residents.

Police said the victims receive a telephone call from a person pretending to be a grandson and that they are involved in an auto accident or some type of police involvement in Peru. The caller then requests that the victim wire money via Western Union to assist him with his problem.

The caller will beg and request that the victim not tell his parents or anyone else that he is in trouble. In each case, the caller provided enough information to convince the victim to wire the money, and one victim wired $4,000 to the scam artist in Peru, according to the release.

Lynbrook police said that it is extremely important to obtain a call back number, hang up and verify the information provided by the caller with relatives before sending money. If it is a scam and it probably is, you money will never be recovered, police said.
