Lynbrook Superintendent Addresses School's Response to Nearby Armed Robbery

At Wednesday night's board of education meeting, Lynbrook Superintendent of Schools Dr. Melissa Burak addressed the school's response to Tuesday's robbery of a delivery truck, which took place a few blocks from West End Elementary School.

A Fed Ex delivery driver was tied up by two suspects and robbed at gunpoint of his wallet, cell phone and packages as he was packed near Sherman Street and Arthur Avenue, according to police. 

Burak said she was first alerted of the incident from a staff member of the school, then "immediately contacted the police to obtain information so an informed decision could be made."

"Little information was provided other than the robbers fled in a car and were out of the area. The incident was over," Burak said. "There was no further action taken and therefore, no need to invoke any lockout or lockdown procedures."

A notification was then sent out on the Lynbrook Schools website, which read: "all buildings are on heightened alert and are not allowing deliveries to the buildings. All students on the north side of town remained in locked buildings and were safe all day."

"At all times the students were safe in locked buildings with normal instruction taking place," Burak said. "Our goal is to maintain a stable environment for the children and at the end of the day, that goal had been achieved."

Burak said she spoke with the Lynbrook police chief regarding communication between the department and the school district.

"He will work on providing timely information to the schools moving forward," Burak said. "He also noted that there was no recommendation issued by the police department to initiate a lockdown or lockout and he supported the district’s actions in response to this incident."
