Malverne Woman Found Dead in Linden Street Home

Nancy Mastrangelo, 62, died Thursday night in her home, where emergency crews put out a small fire.

A Malverne woman was found dead Thursday night in her home on Linden Street, where emergency crews put out a small fire.

Officials say the fire started at 65 Linden St. in a first floor bathroom, where the woman's body was discovered.

Officials identified the deceased as 62-year-old Nancy Mastrangelo. Neighbors said she was a widow and mother of four. According to one neighbor, it was one of her sons, who had checked on his mother daily, that found her lying in the bathroom, where a small fire had broke out in a waste basket.

The and the Lynbrook Fire Department both rushed to the home around 7:30 p.m., as did the Malverne Police and Ambulance Corps. Using eight pieces of apparatus, approximately 30 firefighters worked to extinguish the fire in just minutes, although it had spread into the wall in the bathroom.

The Nassau County Fire Marshal was also called to the scene for an investigation. The arson/bomb squad later determined the fire to be non-suspicious and accidental, but said the cause is still under investigation at this time.

Some eyewitnesses said many cigarettes were found in the home, but it is not clear at this point whether they contributed to the fire.
