An indictment against Maxwell Sherman, 18, of Long Beach, officially charged him with first-degree sexual abuse and second-degree murder, Newsday reported. He was arraigned before Judge Meryl Berkowitz at Nassau County Court in Mineola.
Sherman is accused of murdering 18-year-old Lauren Daverin, a newlywed from Lynbrook, on Aug. 22 in Rockville Centre.
Police said Daverin's body was discovered on a footbridge between Merrick Road and Sunrise Highway after 10 p.m. Aug. 22. She was reportedly beaten and was found with some clothing removed.
Sherman was interviewed by reporters before his arrest and said he was "amazed" and "surprised" by Daverin's tragic death. He was charged three days after her death.
