MVAC Mourns Passing of Co-Founder Aida Monroe

Funeral services will be held Thursday and Friday in Lynbrook.

When the Malverne Volunteer Ambulance Corps finally moved into their headquarters , they reflected back on their 44-year history. How in 1968, after a child was struck by a car and had to wait nearly 30 minutes for a Nassau County ambulance to respond, a group of concerned residents came together to make sure help would never be too far away.

Aida Monroe was one of them. Monroe, who passed away Tuesday at the age of 79, is credited with co-founding the Malverne Volunteer Ambulance Corps, which today responds to an average of 450 calls a year within the village of Malverne, parts of Lynbrook, Valley Stream, Franklin Square and the Southern State Parkway.

Monroe was born on April 6, 1933 in Astoria, Queens. She was devoted to her husband, Merwin, MVAC's first president who was known to many as "Whitey." He passed away a few years ago. She was a loving mother to Mert III (Joan), Glenn (Tracey), and Aida and a cherished grandmother of Kyle and Ashley.

A awake will be held Thursday, Aug. 2, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. and Friday, Aug. 3, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Flinch & Bruns Funeral Home, located at 34 Hempstead Avenue in Lynbrook. A religious service will take place Saturday, Aug. 4, at 9:30 a.m. at the funeral home followed by interment at Flushing Cemetery in Flushing, NY.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions to the can be sent to 11 Hempstead Avenue, Malverne, NY 11565.
