A Nassau County police officer was arrested Tuesday morning after he allegedly stole baby food from a West Hempstead store at an earlier date.

According to investigators, Thomas Welsh, 48, entered the Stop and Shop located at 520 Cherry Valley Lane in West Hempstead and secreted numerous pouches of baby food on his person using plastic bags and a bungee cord. The value of the merchandise was approximately $40.

The Nassau County Internal Affairs Unit arrested Welsh Tuesday morning at 9 a.m. at police headquarters in Mineola.

Welsh was charged with petit larceny and possession of burglary tools. He was released on an appearance ticket and will appear at First District Court in Hempstead on May 17.

A police spokesman told The Associated Press that Welsh, a 25-year veteran of the force assigned to the Records Bureau, has been suspended without pay for 30 days.

According to Newsday [paid link]:

Welsh, on the job since 1986, earned $147,607.43 in 2010, including base salary and overtime, according to county payroll records. He is assigned to the police department's records bureau, which helps handle gun-permit requests, processes prisoners and tests suspected drunken drivers.

Disgusting. He probably doesn't even have a baby, he is just screaming for some kind of attention. People are amazing.

This is sad. I wonder what the motive was. Was he mentally impaired or stressed from something @ home to do that?

Baby food, really? How undignified! His family, if he has any, must be mortified. RP: stress, really, pushing paper all day, give me a break, this guy is cheap and took advantage of his position to take something that did not belong to him. Simply put, he is a cheap thief if this is a true allegation.

This story is a complete smear job my Newsday. The guy was not arrested for shoplifting. He was not arrested at the scene, but instead the next day by internal affairs. I hope they print a retraction and give this guy his dignity back. As for "tepo" you say you didnt need the ticket, but did you deserve it?

I do not know if Mr. Welsh took food or did not take food. Americans do not live on farms. They should not have to pay for a basic amount of healthy food. We need food to survive and no matter how many millions you have paid in taxes in your life, if you are ever down and out, you are forced to live at a starvation level and are lucky if you have a place and the equipment to cook healthy food. Every American is entitled to FREE FOOD! WE DIE WITHOUT IT IF YOU DID NOT NOTICE! WHERE IS MY FARM? As far as Mr. Welsh's salary...well that is another issue of corrupt bullying police unions and the criminal county executives that give them what they want. I fled Nassau and downsized my housing 16 years ago. I will leave the state if the crimes of police salaries and benefits is not stopped PRONTO! That goes for all of the other parasites such as the glorified camp counselors called "School Teachers".
