Patch Question: Most Dangerous Streets in Town

Which streets are dangerous and how can they be made more safe?

A Valley Stream man was on Sunday when he crashed his motorcycle on Peninsula Boulevard, a street that has seen its fair share of accidents over the years.

Back on Oct. 25, five Lynbrook Department volunteers were injured after a car collided with their ambulance on Sunrise Highway in Lynbrook.

Patch user commented on the accident, "It is a very dangerous location as one of very, very few on Sunrise Highway intersection without a traffic light."

What do you think is the most dangerous street in East Rockaway and Lynbrook, and how do you think it can be made safer? Tell us in the comments.

thats an easy one: the most dangerous by far is broadway and sunrise hwy. the next one is sunrise hwy and vincent ave. they put a light at denton- why not one at vincent as well?

forgot to add- most village traffic signals, especially on the main thoroughfares are totally out of sync. perhaps its time to reprogram them? a 30 mph speed limit on sunrise hwy is absurd. raise it to 40 or 45- and enforce it with radar guns.

oops another senior moment- the intersection of merrick road and ocean avenue. extremely dangerous;ive been told that there have been numerous crashes and several fatalities over the years. perhaps changing traffic signals and forbidding turns at certain times would make things safer.

Merrick and Ocean....no contest.

I think maybe Nembridge Rd, between N. Jerusalem & Sunrise HWY. People drive way to fast. Very bad spots are Bellmore beverage & 7/11 to many blind spots with all the truck deliveries. I think they shoud have lites in those areas, but then again you don't make as much money as red lite cameras.

In addition to those already mentioned, I think the intersection of Atlantic Avenue and Union Avenue, just south of Sunrise Hwy near Lynbrook High School, is quite dangerous. The problem is that this three-way intersection has stop signs in two directions, but nothing coming south from Sunrise. People assume it's a 3-way stop and enter the intersection, causing many fender benders. It used to be worse, when there was a stop sign going north on Atlantic, a yield sign going north on Union, and nothing going south. Nobody knew who had the right-of-way.

@ Pete C, I agree with that. I want to add to this - in East Rockaway, the intersection at Main Street and Front Street (right in front of Post Office).

I've added all the intersections/streets mentioned to the map.

Merrick & Broadway/Atlantic as well as Merrick & Peninsula... Nobody seems to know how to handle those long left hand turns lanes off of Merrick Rd.

It is deffinately Merrick and Ocean, once they put in the left turn going west - it confused people, people in that lane come over at the light and for some reason once thru the light go into the right lane. I thought something was suppose to be done here.

get rid of the left turn at merrick and ocean going west. restrict all other turns to non-rush hour periods. re-time the traffic signals. prohibit southbound traffic on ocean from making left turns onto merrick during rush hours. in other words, redesign the whole bloody intersection before it becomes "blood alley".

oops another senior moment. i meant the left turn from ocean ave south onto merrick road east. there used to be a left turn from penninsula blvd south to sunrise hwy east (under the train trestle) it was a nightmare. once a no-left-turn sign was installed, traffic flowed more smoothly.

Icarumba, there should be a left turn arrow at that intersection so you can turn left to go east onto Sunrise Highway from Peninsula. Also, at the intersection of Merrick and Ocean, you have idiots making a left onto Merrick Road from the CENTER lane of southbound Ocean. They should wait in the turn lane like everyone else. People are in too much of a hurry and they think they own the roads. They have no patience or consideration. It's the "me" generation at it's worst. They think they can do whatever they want to do. Drivers are the problem as much as the roads, if not more.
