UPDATE: Police Probe Suspicious Suitcase at West Hempstead Bus Stop

Alleged abandoned suitcase prompts bomb squad investigation.

Nassau County Police investigated a suspicious suitcase that was left at the bus stop on Hempstead Avenue in West Hempstead Tuesday afternoon.

The item was located next to a bench near the National Wholesale Liquidators parking lot and across from West 130 apartment complex.

A construction worker at the West 130 site called police after noticing it was sitting there since his morning. Nassau County Police and the Bomb Squad arrived on the scene around 2:30 p.m.

The bomb squad sent in a remote-controlled robot to assess the suitcase around 3:30 p.m. and then used the machine to detonate any possible explosives that the package may have contained, but there were none.

A section of Hempstead Avenue between Hempstead Turnpike and Woodfield Road had been closed during the investigation but was reopened shortly before 4:30 p.m.
