Police: Man Punched Carvel Employee Over Ice Cream Cone

Valley Stream man arrested for robbery after allegedly punching 55-year-old woman over ice cream.

The author Don Kardong once said "Without ice cream, there would be darkness and chaos" -- police say that a robbery in Valley Stream Tuesday proved just the opposite.

A Valley Stream man was arrested Tuesday morning after he allegedly punched a 55-year-old female Carvel employee over an ice cream cone.

According to Nassau County detectives, William Hotz, 59, entered the Carvel located at 1551 Dutch Broadway and ordered a $3.50 ice cream cone.

Hotz took his cone and gave the employee a coupon for “One Free Ice Cream Cone," police say. The employee told Hotz that the coupon had expired and he would need to pay for the cone.

Without paying, police say Hotz turned and walked out of the store.

After being confronted by the employee outside the Carvel, police say Hotz punched the woman in the face multiple times causing her to sustain a laceration and swelling to her lip.

Police arrived to the scene shortly after the incident and attempted to place Hotz into custody. However, police say that Hotz refused to be handcuffed while flailing his arms and twisting his body.

According to police, with the assistance of other officers, Hotz was eventually placed under arrest. The victim declined medical treatment for her injuries.

Hotz is charged with robbery in the third degree and resisting arrest. He will be arraigned on May 2 at First District Court in Hempstead.
