State Troopers Find Loaded Gun When Pulling Over West Hempstead Man

Rod Ewart, 40, arrested for criminal possession of a weapon and traffic violations on Southern State Parkway.

A West Hempstead man was arrested on the Southern State Parkway Tuesday night after troopers discovered he was driving without a license and with a loaded handgun when they pulled him over for allegedly speeding.

New York State troopers stopped Rod Ewart, 40, on the eastbound side of the parkway near Route 110 in Farmingdale just before 8:30 p.m. on Oct. 25. They had clocked him allegedly going 76 MPH, more than 20 MPH over the limit, in a blue Cadillac and changing lanes without signaling.

One trooper said Ewart appeared nervous while being interviewed and a license check revealed that he was driving unlicensed, New York State Police report. While conducting an impound search of Ewart's vehicle, troopers also recovered a loaded handgun in the center console.

He was arrested for second degree Criminal Possession of a Weapon, a Class C felony, and traffic violations. He was held for arraginment in Nassau County First District Court.
