Teen Killed in Southern State Crash

The incident occurred early Wednesday morning just west of the Eagle Avenue exit.

A 16-year-old driver was killed early Wednesday morning on the Southern State Parkway after striking a tree on the side of the road.

According to New York State Police, at approximately 12:33 a.m., Nasir Rivera, 16, of Elmont, was operating a 1998 Acura westbound on the Southern State Parkway just west of exit 18 when he drove off the roadway and struck a tree.

Rivera was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

According to Newsday [paid link], Rivera was the only occupant in the car at the time of the accident.

Investigation into the cause of the accident is pending.
