Uniondale Teen Charged With Manslaughter in West Hempstead Crash

Daritza Lopez, 18, was the driver of the vehicle that slammed into a building on Hempstead Turnpike Tuesday morning.

A Uniondale teen has been charged in the that occurred in West Hempstead Tuesday morning.

Daritza Lopez, 18, faces second degree manslaughter, vehicular manslaughter, driving while intoxicated and aggravated unlicensed operation of motor vehicle in the third degree.

According to Nassau County Police, Lopez lost control of her vehicle while driving along Hempstead Turnpike at 5:35 a.m. on Nov. 29. She struck a parked car, crossed over the westbound lane, entered the parking lot of an abandoned gas station and then slammed into the wall of a building.

Her passenger, 28-year-old Herica Conteras, also of Uniondale, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police say Lopez, who was transported to an area hospital, will be arraigned as soon as it is medically practical.
