UPDATE: 1,008 Malverne, West Hempstead Residents Still Without Power

As of 9 a.m., the Long Island Power Authority reported 1,008 outages in Malverne, West Hempstead and Lakeview.

The power has started to come back on in many homes in Malverne, West Hempstead and Lakeview that had been in the dark for several hours, even days following Hurricane Irene.

However, as of 9 a.m. Tuesday 1,008 residents were still waiting for their electricity to be restored.

Irene, which started as a Category 3 hurricane was downgraded to a severe tropical storm before striking Long Island, but still caused major damage to the communities, knocking down trees and power lines.

According to the Long Island Power Authority's Storm Center, 368 customers in Malverne, 128 in Lakview and 512 in West Hempstead were still experiencing outages Tuesday morning, but this was down from 2,400 the day before.

According to LIPA's Web site, workers were still being assessing the outages and no estimate was given for when they would be fixed.

In a press briefing held Monday morning, LIPA said most customers experiencing outages on Long Island would have their power restored by Friday.
