V.S. Fire Department Responds to Small Fire Outside Valbrook Diner

Popular eatery is located just a few blocks from Lynbrook border.

The Valley Stream Fire Department responded to a small structural fire at the Valbrook Diner in Valley Stream late last night, just a few blocks from the Valley Stream-Lynbrook border.

"It was probably a discarded cigarette in the mulch outside the front doorway," said Joseph Fernandez, a chief with the Valley Stream Fire Department. "The flowerbed where the mulch was smoldered, finally got behind the aluminum capping, and caught the 2x4s, they started smoldering.

"It was a minor fire, we were able to access it and extinguish it," Fernandez said. "There's not that much structural damage."

Merrick Road between Emerson Place and Cornwell Avenue in Valley Stream was blocked off while firefighters extinguished the fire.

There were no injuries, and no damage was done to the interior of the diner, a very popular eatery among Valley Stream and Lynbrook residents. The diner takes syllables — "val" and "brook" — from the names of both villages.

The owner of the Valbrook Diner, who identified himself as "Bill," said "everything's okay" inside the diner, and that it is still open for business.
