West Hempstead Family Loses Power, Then Home

West Hempstead firefighters and LIPA crews respond to home on Willow Street.

An unusual chain of events forced a West Hempstead family from their home early Sunday evening.

Long Island Power Authority crews were working on Willow Street on June 24 to repair a downed electrical service line that was torn from the home by a fallen branch. Just as power was being restored though, a fire broke out in the basement of the house.

The West Hempstead Fire Department responded to the home, quickly extinguised the blaze and turned off the gas. The fire may have been caused by a faulty gas line to an appliance on the lower level.

LIPA crews once again disconnected power to the home due to the fire. The Buildings Department was called to the scene and the house was declared inhabitable due to variety of existing conditions.
