West Hempstead Helps Battle 7-Hour Blaze

West Hempstead Fire Department joins 12 other departments to extinguish fire in Roosevelt.

West Hempstead firefighters aided 12 other departments in battling a fire in Roosevelt that burned for over seven hours, according to responders.

The blaze broke out in a garage in Roosevelt just after 12 p.m. Wednesday, according to Tim Asbell. It quickly grew and three alarms sounded for help, he said.

The fire was finally declared extinguished after seven hours, said Asbell, after the work of 13 departments and several hazmat crews.

Hazmat, which works in oil, gas, propane, acetylene, and more, were called in to tackle substances that fueled the fire.

West Hempstead Fire Department joined Bellmore, Merrick and North Merrick, East Meadow, Roosevelt, Freeport, Baldwin, Oceanside, Rockville Centre, Uniondale, Hempstead, East Meadow, and Elmont departments in the response.
