West Hempstead Home Catches Fire, Family Escapes

Firefighters battle blaze on Oak Street early Sunday morning.

A West Hempstead family escaped their Oak Street home early Sunday morning after it caught fire.

West Hempstead volunteer firefighters were called around 5:15 a.m. to the house at 153 Oak St., and found smoke and flames coming from the side of the home.

The residents and their family dog were already in the street when the fire department arrived, having fleed to safety on their own. No injuries were reported.

Several surrounding departments were called to the scene to assist and the blaze was brought under control within 30 minutes.

The cause of the fire is not known at this time.
