West Hempstead Man Arrested for Menacing, Assaulting Officers

Laroy Floyd allegedly assaulted officers after leaving the CVS on Hempstead Avenue.

A West Hempstead man was arrested Friday after allegedly assaulting police officers outside of the located at 814 Hempstead Ave.

According to Nassau County detectives, Fifth Precinct officers responded to the CVS for the report of a suspicious person. A 34-year-old male employee of the store had recognized the defendant, Laroy Floyd, 50, from a prior shoplifting occurrence at the store.

When the employee advised the defendant to leave the premises Floyd threatened him with a walking stick he was carrying, police said. The defendant fled the scene on foot but was located a short time later by responding officers at Hempstead Avenue and Eagle Avenue.

According to police, as the officers attempted to secure the stick, Floyd resisted and swung the stick striking an officer in the face. A struggle ensued and Floyd was eventually placed into custody.

Two officers were removed to a local hospital, police said. One officer sustained a fractured nose and contusions to his left knee, while the second officer sustained lacerations and contusions to his right hand and right knee. Both officers were treated and released.

Floyd was charged with two counts of assault in the second degree, two counts of criminal possession of a weapon in the third degree, menacing in the second degree and resisting arrest. He was arraigned at First District Court in Hempstead on Saturday.
