West Hempstead Teen Charged with DUI, Vehicular Assault

The defendant and his passenger were taken to Winthrop Hospital with serious physical injuries after the crash in Hempstead.

A West Hempstead teen was charged with second degree vehicular assault and driving while under the influence after a serious car accident in Hempstead Wednesday night.

According to Nassau County detectives, around 10 a.m., the defendant, Camilo Araya, 19, of West Hempstead, was operating a 2001 Mitsubishi southbound on Peninsula Boulevard when it struck the rear of a 2009 Mitsubishi.

The collision caused the Araya's car to then strike a utility pole and flip over, ejecting Araya and his 23-year-old male front passenger into the roadway, police said. Both individuals were unconscious and transported to Winthrop Hospital for serious physical injuries.

According to police, the 27-year-old female driver of the 2009 Mitsubishi was treated at a local hospital for pain in her neck and back.

The investigation is ongoing.

Araya will be arraigned as soon as medically practical.
