West Hempstead Teen Struck Crossing Turnpike

Firefighters transport 14-year-old pedestrian to hospital with injuries.

A 14-year-old West Hempstead girl was struck by a vehicle on Hempstead Turnpike Tuesday afternoon.

West Hempstead Volunteer Firefighters and Nassau County Police responded to the scene, near Poplar Street, were the teen was lying in roadway.

According to a source at the scene, a sedan had struck the girl as she was crossing the turnpike. Then man who had been driving the car stopped immediately to attend to her as others called police.

Firefighters transported the teen to Winthrop Hospital with head, back and neck injuries, where she remained Wednesday afternoon.

The stretch of the turnpike where the accident occurred is currently under construction as a repaving project is underway. It's not clear if this played a factor in the accident. Police are conducting an investigation.
