WH Family Loses Dog in Early Morning House Fire

Neighbor reported hearing loud boom before fire.

Story by Lou Minutoli:

A West Hempstead family escaped serious injury early Thursday morning after a raging fire broke out in the basement of their home on New York Avenue.

While the family managed to escape, their dog succumbed to the fire.

West Hempstead firefighters were called to the scene just before 1 a.m. and found flames shooting from a basement window and the area around the home covered in thick black smoke.

The occupants of the house were all able to evacuate to safety.

One neighbor reported hearing a loud boom and then coming out to see his neighbors house ablaze.

Firefighters were quickly on the scene and made their ways with hose lines into the basement.

Several other surrounding fire departments were called to assist with the extinguishment. Nassau County Fire Marshals were called to the scene to investigate a cause.
