Wrong-Way Driver Causes Head-On Crash in Malverne

A confused driver collided into another car traveling in the wrong direction on the entrance of the Southern State Parkway.

Two cars smashed head-on into one another Saturday morning on the entrance ramp of the Southern State Parkway in Malverne Park Oaks.

The confused driver of a SUV mistakenly turned down Emerson Drive, a road adjacent to the entrance ramp for the Southern State Parkway at Exit 17 (Hempstead Avenue). The driver then proceeded to drive up the entrance ramp, heading in the wrong direction, and collided into a sedan that was attempting to access the parkway correctly.

Both drivers were injured and transported to nearby hospitals.

Thes EMS unit and Nassau County Police were on the scene.

That entrance ramp is very confusing. Must make a tight left to enter parkway. Also, on the exit ramp for exit 17 one must watch for cars to the right that are exiting onto Hempstead Ave or trying to get on Southern State westbound. A horror.

I don't understand. The author of the story says the driver mistakenly turned on to Emerson Drive, but the accident took place on the ramp. I think he wanted to say the driver intended to turn on to Emerson, but mistakenly took the ramp instead.

@Steven: The driver (of the SUV) actually turned down Emerson Drive by mistake and then drove up the adjacent entrance ramp, heading in the wrong direction. Sorry for the confusion.

Behind on my email and see the clarification from Tara from Sunday but FYI the caption on the pictures is still incorrect. I agree with "jan" that it's definitely a tricky little exit there. Perhaps we need a huge sign that extends down the correct entrance for people there. Although of course this story proves there can be issues coming off the SS as well! Hope all involved are okay/in good health now.
