Adoptable Animal of the Week: Meet Captain Rufus

This friendly (pirate) pooch is searching for his forever home.

Name: Rufus

Case Number: #5970

Ahoy Matey! My name is Rufus. Don't be fooled by my pirate disguise, I'm actually a very friendly and handsome pooch. And the only treasure I'm searching for is someone who can give me a loving home.

Interested? Here's what you need to know about me. I'm a young, male terrier mix. I'm currently staying at the  as I wait to be adopted. While I'm personable with everyone, my personality really blossoms when I'm with my special people! I love to share deep meaningful glances with my favorite humans and I can be very playful.

I love toys, but will give them up easily for a tasty treat. I enjoy playing fetch with tennis balls. Because of my size, I might be better in a family with tweens and up, though I tend to be polite and don't jump up. I tolerate all types of handling and though I don't love having to give up my food or chewies, I will if I have to.

I am interested in making the acquaintance with everyone, even the most unusual strangers (hooded, limping, etc.). If given a little time (and a treat!)I will make friends with them. While I'm interested in other dogs and tolerant of their antics, I'm better with some than others. With the right playmates, I might learn to be more playful and appropriate, but introductions should be done carefully due to my size and strength.

I have already had some training -- sit, stay, come, give hugs -- and am eager to learn more for a taste of my favorite treats! One thing I definitely need to learn is to walk nicely on leash. Plus, training will help us forge a relationship.

If you're interested in adopting Rufus, contact the Town of Hempstead Animal Shelter at (516) 785-5220 or come in for a visit. The shelter is located at 3320 Beltagh Avenue in Wantagh. Adoption hours are Monday through Saturday, 9 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. All adopted pets will be spayed or neutered, will receive all required innoculations and will be microchipped, all free of charge.

From June 20 to Sept 20, the shelter is running its "Summer of Love" promotion, which means all adoptions are free!
