Becker, Meeks Win Congressional Primaries

Unofficial election results put candidates ahead in fourth and fifth district elections.

Nassau County Legislator Francis Becker, R-Lynbrook, will once again have the chance to challenge Congresswoman Carolyn McCarthy for her seat in November, according to unofficial election results.

With 100 percent of precincts reporting, Becker received 55 percent of the vote to challenger Frank Scaturro's 44 percent. The two had sparred for the nomination in 2010, when Becker was also victorious.

"Thank you to everyone who came out to vote at the polls today," Becker said on his Facebook page. "Thank you for caring about our country and community and also supporting our system of democracy."

Meanwhile, Gregory Meeks, who has represented the sixth district in the U.S. assembly since 1998, beat out three competitors for the Democratic nomination in the fifth district.

A federal court a new district map in March, which shifted Meeks to a new fifth district that now includes Inwood and other parts of southwest Nassau County.

Meeks received 65 percent of the vote, with 85 percent of the vote in. Allan Jennings, a former New York City council member, received 12 percent of the vote. Lawyer and hip-hop artist Mike Scala got 11 percent of the vote, while Joseph Marthone, an accountant, received 9 percent.

Meeks will face Jennings, who also ran unopposed on the Republican line, in the November race.
