Coliseum is Rusting Relic; Now What?

Politicians bemoan loss of Islanders; what would you do with Uniondale site?

Let's face it: our Coliseum isn't Rome's.

The rusting relic of a bygone sports era is going to be abandoned by the Islanders for Brooklyn, and soon.

If you live in Plainview, you can still see your team play, and easily: Take the LIRR from Hicksville to Jamaica; hop on the Atlantic Yards Line and emerge at the Barclays Center. Simple; no parking headaches.

But that still leaves an 77-acre vacancy at a major Nassau County crossroads.

Wednesday night, County Executive Edward P. Mangano issued a statement, saying that following the funeral services honoring fallen Nassau Police Officer Arthur Lopez, Mangano will put an economic development team in place to redevelop "The Hub."

Tell us what you think should be done with the site:

  • What should our legislative leaders do right now to move forward?
  • What sports or recreational facility should be built there? (Maybe it's time to bring back Roosevelt Raceway and a racino? Minor League baseball is a blast.)
  • What related economic development initiatives make sense for the site?

We'll compile your answers into poll form and pass them along to Nassau's leaders.

The horse has already left the barn - no more shopping centers - we needed the Coliseum to be refurbished for the ISLANDERS - not minor league sports teams - Looking back on this in twenty years we will see what a horrible job the executives and officials have done to lose our only proud professional sports franchise

How about a state of the art convention center, world class hotel, theatre, restaurants. Create a site that makes money, that people will come to.

New York does not need any more casinos, malls or other places to lose money at..let's try for something that will really employ people and put money in our pockets.. I like Simba s ideas....

The fight for a new venue is over and nassau county residents lost out because of the incompetent politicians on long Island. We just don't have politicians on long island who are smart enough and have the guts to actually get something done that will benefit the people that they are elected to serve. Instead they waste our time playing politics , wasting our tax dollars , and looking out for themselves. Pretty sad. The only thing you can do now is to never vote for an incumbent poltician on long island .
