New York State Republican Assembly Delegation helps raise more than $10,000 for breast cancer research.

On May 24, the New York State Republican Assembly Delegation hosted a “6 For A Cure” fundraiser to benefit local breast cancer awareness organizations 1 in 9 and Hewlett House.

The event, which was held at Chateau Briand in Carle Place, was attended by more than 130 individuals.

The delegation consists of the six Republican assemblymen from Nassau County: Brian Curran (Lynbrook-14th A.D.), Joseph S. Saladino (12th A.D.), David G. McDonough (R,C,I-Merrick), Tom McKevitt (R,C,I-East Meadow), Michael Montesano (R,I,C-Glen Head) and Edward P. Ra (21st A.D.).

“The goal of the 6 For A Cure event was to raise much-needed funds for two incredible community organizations that are designed solely to help women diagnosed with breast cancer," Curran said.

Since 1990, 1 in 9: The Long Island Breast Cancer Action Coalition has been committed to fighting the cancer epidemic through education, outreach, environmental advocacy and spearheading changes to legislation affecting cancer issues.

Since a majority of breast cancer cases fall outside the known risk categories, 1 in 9 is unique in looking at environmental factors as possible causes and in seeking and promoting ways to keep our environment healthy.

In 2001, Hewlett House was opened to the public. Located at 86 East Rockaway Road in Hewlett, Hewlett House may look like an ordinary home, but inside sits a nonprofit community-learning resource center open to everyone.

The goal of Hewlett House is to provide patients and their families a free, warm and welcoming place to obtain resources and education, as well as a safe haven for those whose lives have been touched by cancer. Hewlett House offers people affected by cancer a place to come together, network and receive information.

The event included a 40-item auction that raised additional funds for the two organizations. The Nassau County Republican Assembly Delegation said the 6 for a Cure event raised more than $10,000 for 1 in 9 and Hewlett House.

"I am truly overwhelmed and honored, and I want to thank Assemblyman Brian Curran and all of the members of the Nassau County Republican Assembly Delegation for this honor, award and spectacular evening," said Geri Barish, President of 1 in 9 Breast Cancer Action Coalition. "It is truly inspiring to see public officials work hand in hand with those afflicted with the scourge of breast cancer. It gives us all hope."

"We are all so happy that the event was a huge success. Until the day that a cure for breast cancer is found, events like 6 For A Cure will financially help organizations like 1 in 9 and Hewlett House continue their work in comforting women with breast cancer," Curran added.
