All news is local.
For the past 48 hours, Patch editors put that maxim to the test, tracking just how a national event like a debate between the leader of the free world and the man hoping to be the next one affected locals on Long Island. The stories were not hard to find.
The second presidential debate at Hofstra University turned the Hempstead region on its head, flooding the surrounding areas with security, protesters, politicians, pundits, news networks, and a very excited Hofstra student body, professors and administration.
But the event's impact stretched across Long Island, from Romney's plane landing in Islip to the host of student volunteers from communities far and wide who played a role on campus.
So take a look at our full story list below, and see if there's anything you missed.

Speaking of gas, does anybody remember paying over $4/gal in 2006? Gas prices are artificially high because big oil wants it that way.
In my mind I visualize three Romneys seated and answering questions from the panel. There is Governor Romney, Bain CEO Romney and Candidate Romney. When a question is asked, all three Romneys give a different answer. This continues until until the panelists have to pick the real Romney. When the moderator asks the real Romney to stand up, there are feeble attempts by all three to stand up. No surprise, none of the Romneys stand up because none of them were telling the truth.
Unemployment is down but, unemployment numbers are just like weight, being rich, and happiness; you can never be too skinny, too rich or too happy, and have too little unemployment. Of course we all want 0%. I don't think that has ever happened (I could be wrong). We are out of Iraq and by 2014 out of Afganistan. Two huge drains on our economy and money from those two money holes drilled by The Shrub can be used for other things domestically. Obama said he would get us out of Iraq and he did. Osama is dead. Romny considered that not to be an important thing to do. Well it was. The housing market and new starts are on the rise. One if not the key indicator to a strengthening economy. We are living in the most peaceful least violent time in a long time. Part of that is due to military technology, but also due to us not being belligerent bullies in the world theater. We should not be the policemen of the world. We should be more like a moral compass IMHO.
Also, Obama has nothing to do with property taxes - you can thank your local government for that. And by the way, I am not making 15% less under Obama. My salary has actually risen - I am a hard working person who works in the private sector. I do believe the deficit is way too high but I certainly do not trust Romney/Ryan to do anything about that.
