A weekly look-in at news from around the Town of Hempstead.

Town Holding 9/11 Memorial Sunday

Thousands are expected to participate in a special Town of Hempstead interactive 9/11 program during a sunrise ceremony at 7:30 a.m. Sunday at Town Park Point Lookout on Lido Boulevard.

Friends, family and neighbors will cross a specially constructed pedestrian bridge that will traverse a 30-foot steel beam recovered from the World Trade Center. The beam will be suspended over a reflecting pool upon which participants will cast white carnations.

At the memorial service, which will include speeches by family members of victims, reflections by clergy, a dove release and a choir, the Town of Hempstead will announce that it is seeking input via Facebook for a permanent location of the 30-foot World Trade Center beam it has secured for preservation.
