How'd They Plow? Show Us How Your Streets Look!

Patch wants to see how your streets are shaping up after the snowstorm.

While most residents will probably stay home today, as the 14 inches that pummeled the area has given atleast all students in Malverne and West Hempstead a snow day, we'll all eventually need to dig our cars out and hit the roads.

The and Town of Hempstead plows have been working all day and night to clean up the streets, but we want to know how they're doing. That's where you come in!

Whether you can see the pavement or you have a better chance of cross country skiing to get around your neck of the woods, we want to see.  Help us give credit where it is deserved -to the workers who have out cleaning the streets while we stay warm inside - and let us help you if your street has been neglected.

Upload or e-mail a photo of your block and indicate the name of the street. If you're streets seem to be grossly neglected, call either the Malverne DPW at 516-599-1200, if you're a village resident, or the Town of Hempstead Highway Department at (516) 489-5000.

Also, remember to practice these rules when clearing snow from your property for everyone's sake.

  • Don't blow snow from your property back into the road. This only adds to the work that the plow drivers must do. Apparently during the December blizzard.
  • Clear the snow to the right of your driveway to avoid being "plowed in."
  • Residents are required to shovel their sidewalks.
  • If you have a fire hydrant in front of your house, from this so it can be accessed if necessary.
  • Do not park your car out on the street overnight.
  • Do not drive down a street that has not been plowed yet. You'll just get stuck and emergency crews - who already find themselves extra busy in the wake of a snow storm - may need to come get you out.
  • If you are able to, assist any older residents. The senior citizens in Malverne are looking for people to shovel their properties. Contact at 516-599-1200 if you can give them a hand.
  • ....and help your neighbor when you can.

Stay safe and try to stay warm! Happy Snow Day!
