In Nassau, Protesting has its Privileges

One year after Sandy, property tax assessments are on the rise.

Nassau County homeowners are protesting their tax rates in record numbers.

According to a Newsday report, property tax protests rose to the highest levels since the county reassessment 10 years ago.

There have been 151,360 protests this year, according to the report, which adds that's up 16 percent from a year ago.

Critics argue that the increase is taking place because County Executive Ed Mangano's administration is approving too many assessment reductions. But Mangano responded by saying the increase is tied to Sandy and the deadline extension tied to the superstorm.

Protesting also has its privileges.

A Newsday review found 84.7 percent of homeowners who filed challenges, about 94,000 throughout Nassau, were able to lower assessments in 2012.
