Dear Senator Skelos,
I've been bothered by something for a while now and I'm not sure how to proceed. I met you at an open forum you held at West Hempstead Library last year. I asked you about two convicted sex offenders who live on the same block as (only 478 feet away from the school and another 733 feet!) in West Hempstead. Your assistant, Ms. Sandra Smith, investigated and kindly got back to me saying that unfortunately, the offenders listed on the family watchdog Web site, were "grandfathered in." That information did not sit well with me, as the street they live on faces the playground of the elementary school. But I didn't pursue it further as it seemed a dead end.
Since my daughter now attends George Washington Elementary as a first grader, I've received numerous mailings (just this past school year alone) about sex offenders moving into the . With each one, I get more and more uneasy. As an example, one notification listed a new tenant at the Capri. His violation was "rape 1st: intercourse with person less than 11 years old."
Then, tonight I received yet another email notification about this same topic from New York State, detailing yet another new resident at the Capri with the same type of convictions. This is a huge problem for West Hempstead residents, and especially for the children who attend school only 0.34 miles away! It is a problem that is spiraling out of control and we need your help.
Please Senator Skelos, can you please look into the Capri Motor Inn? From my notifications sent from the school district, there are numerous sex offenders now residing at this motel. So not only do the residents and students of GW Elementary have to deal with TWO convicted sex offenders living on the same block as the school, we now have to deal with the Capri being a revolving door of criminality of the most debase kind!
Thank you for your time and I eagerly await to hear your response.
Mrs. Andrea Shinsato
West Hempstead Resident
