At the elementary level, Alex Cooper was announced as a 2nd place NYS runner-up, and Matthew Renz as a NYS champion - the first ever in Lynbrook history.

Eddie Ferrall, Ken Jorge and John Espinosa were recognized for their performance at the high school level. Ferrall took second place in the qualifying tournament. He lost but wrestled well in a tough finals match, and then wrestled well in the county tourney, according to coach Richie Renz.

"He worked real hard this year," Renz said.

"[Jorge] didn't wrestle last year but came back this year and had to wrestle in six matches in the qualifying tournament just to qualify," Renz said. "He won 80 percent of his matches and most of them came down to overtime, but you always knew he would win the match."

Espinosa went 23-3 his senior year, with all 23 wins coming by way of pins, according to Renz. He went all the way to the county semi-finals, and lost to eventual state champion, Evan Kappatos of Syosset, who was also named a first team all-state football player. Espinosa was the only wrestler to put Kappatos on his back this year, according to Renz.

"He almost got him...the coach looked over and he knew if he would have got on top of him, it was over," Renz said.

"He’s real big, real strong, and he’s an outstanding football player, one of the top offensive lineman in the county this season," Renz said of Espinosa. "He would just pancake and blow people off the line. In wrestling it was the same thing."
