Maragos, Rice Victorious on Election Day

Comptroller and District Attorney to continue their reigns in Nassau County.

Kathleen Rice and George Maragos will continue their leadership as District Attorney and Comptroller in Nassau County.

Maragos garnered 137,647 votes for Comptroller against Howard Weitzman's 123,942, giving him 52.6 percent of the vote agains his old rival. Early polls put Weitzman in a small lead against Maragos before Election Day, but Maragos pushed ahead and joined the Republican sweep of major Nassau County offices.

Meanwhile, Rice won in a landslide against Howard E. Sturim for DA, grabbing 155,688 votes against his 109,538. She totaled 58.68 percent of the vote.

Maragos, 64, of Russell Gardens, won the Comptroller title in 2009 against then-incumbent Weitzman, a Democrat. Since then, he said he brought a "common sense philosophy that government must live within its means," according to Newsday.

Rice, 48, of Garden City, became the NCDA in 2005 and since then, has been a champion against DWI. She also said "plea bargaining is down, [with] more violent felons and gang members . . . going to jail," according to Newsday.
