New Recycling Schedule, Parking Permits Announced at Village Meeting

The Village of East Rockaway held their monthly meeting at Village Hall on Monday night.

The Village of East Rockaway announced several changes to parking permits and the recycling program at Monday's monthly village meeting.

Parking Permits

Mayor Francis T. Lenahan Jr. announced that the issuance of new parking permits for the municipal field has been suspended for any non-resident applicants. The village hopes to maximize their use for residents and commuters, those with overnight permits and residential permits.

"By maximizing the use of our municipal fields, we can alleviate some of the recent parking issues within the perimeters of our business community," Lenahan said. "We must analyze the way we address the amount of permits issued and the ability to provide parking to our residents first."

Four new zones, dates and types of recycling will begin in East Rockaway on Nov. 28, as outlined in the November newsletter.

The new recycling schedule plan is for the recycling of newspapers, cardboard, cans, glass and plastics. All of these items will now be collected on the same day, and should be placed at the curbside by 7 a.m. on the appropriate day.

The plan splits the village into four zones: zone 1 picks up on Tuesday, and includes homes south of Main Street; zone 2 is Wednesday for homes west of Cathay Road; zone 3 is Thursday for homes near Scranton Ave. to the northwest of town; and zone 4 is Friday for homes along Ocean Ave. to the northeast.

The full map is listed on the village newsletter. Lenahan said the change was a no-brainer for the village.

"This new program will save tax dollars, free up additional personnel, and work more efficiently," he said.

Village recycle bins are available at the Department of Public Works, located at 85 Williamson Street.

Lenahan also mentioned the village's new "Keep it Clean" campaign, which aims to increase the overall cleanliness of the village.

"The village is getting cleaner, but more needs to be done," Lenahan said.

Lenahan said that residents with storm drains near their home should keep it from being blocked by leaves and debris.

The village has also purchased their first "Doggie Waste Station" located at Minore Park. A photo of the station can be found on the village website homepage.

John Street Resolution Passed

The board passed resolution 4995, which authorizes the transfer of funds to the amount of $173,428 for the John Street drainage work, for the on Sunday, Nov. 27 at 1 p.m.

Shoulder Paving Machine Purchased

The village has purchased and delivered a self-powered shoulder paving machine, which cost $39,990.

"The machine gives the village the ability to do more roadwork on our own and save more taxpayers dollars," Lenahan said.
