On the Farm: Black-eyed Peas, Cinnamon Buns, Sauces and More

See what's selling, growing and going on at Crossroads Farm in Malverne this week.

Wondering what's growing and going on at , Nassau County's very own farm situated in the village of Malverne?

We'll keep you informed with our weekly "On the Farm" column. Here's our latest update from Farmer Bill Walsh, the Nassau Land Trust (the non-profit that operates the farm) and the rest of the crew at Crossroads.

It's the height of harvesting for tomatoes, green bell peppers, and frying peppers at the farm. Basil, sunflowers, and all of our flowers are at their peak, too. The peak season for onions is coming soon.

Our garlic has been cured by drying, and is ready for sale at the farm stand. Curing helps garlic bulbs last longer, while fresh garlic has a much shorter shelf life. We grow a stiff-neck variety of garlic, which means the shoot is very tough.

We're seeding brussel sprouts and rutabagas for the fall, and already watching the growth of our winter squashes. This year we'll see acorn, butternut, and honeynut squash again.
