Patricia Callahan To Fill Vacant Trustee Seat in Malverne

She will be taking the seat of her late husband, James Callahan III, for the Village of Malverne.

Patricia Callahan, widow of James Callahan III, the Deputy Mayor and Trustee who , was named to the trustee seat her husband left vacant on Wednesday night at the Village of Malverne meeting.

“After deep thinking and some soul searching I feel that she is the best person to be trustee,” stated Mayor Patricia Ann Norris-McDonald during the monthly meeting.

“Jim represented the residents of Malverne well with his extensive legal knowledge as well as his experience with local issues and concerns. We are very fortunate to have a replacement that brings similar skills and talents to the Village Board,” McDonald added.

The daughter of the former Malverne Mayor Joseph Canzoneri, Callahan will take over the seat until a special election can be held.

The late James Callahan III was hospitalized at North Shore University after he  on April 9.  While at the facility, doctors found that he had an aggressive form of cancer.  at the age of 42.

Consulting with her family, Callahan's children believed that filling the vacant seat would be a good way to honor their father and her husband. She wants to continue the goals that her husband wanted to achieve in his fourth term.

“I am pleased to swear in Patricia Callahan," Former Mayor Joseph Canzoneri said. "She is continuing the family legacy in becoming an active part of the community and maintaining the special quality of life in Malverne."

As a lifelong resident of Malverne, Callahan is involved in many aspects of the community, some of which include the Village Beautification Committee and education.

“I will help the village continue to be fiscally responsible and keep the quality of life in Malverne,” Trustee Callahan said.

She holds a Master of Law degree in taxation from New York University School of Law. Additionally, she graduated Cum Laude from St. John’s Law School and Magna Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Science in Accounting from St. John’s College of Business Administration. 

Currently, she is a partner at a law firm that is involved with estate planning, trust and estate administration, real estate and income tax planning.  As a certified public accountant, she has worked with well-known firms, such as Arthur Andersen and Deloitte & Touche.

Callahan is also an active part in the county. She has been appointed to the board of the Nassau County Sewer and Storm Water Finance Authority.

As the newly appointed trustee spoke to residents, she thanked the Mayor, her family, children and residents for supporting her and looks forward working with the members of the Board of Trustees to continue bringing positive things to the residents of Malverne.
