Poll: Christie Would Beat Cuomo - in New York

A Siena survey shows that Empire State voters are not as high on their governor as they used to be.

If Gov. Andrew Cuomo were to run for president, he would lose his home state to New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, according to a poll of New York voters.

A Siena College poll shows that Christie has a 47 percent to 42 percent advantage over Cuomo.

The same poll shows Hillary Rodham Clinton with a 56 percent to 40 percent lead over New Jersey's governor.

Only 44 percent of New York voters currently rate Cuomo's performance as excellent or good, while 56 percent give him fair or poor marks.

"More than twice as many voters think he’s doing a poor job compared to an excellent job, and more voters now think Cuomo is doing a fair (39 percent) or poor job (17 percent) than at any time in his three years as governor," Siena College pollster Steve Greenberg said in a statement.

But the news wasn't all bad for Cuomo. The governor would easily defeat New York Republican challengers. He would defeat GOP Committee Chairman Ed Cox, Westchester County Executive Rob Astorino or Buffalo-based businessman Carl Paladino by about 40 percentage points.

"Against all three, he gets the support of more than 80 percent of Democrats, a strong majority of independents and a little more than one-third of Republicans," Greenberg said. "And that’s before he spends a dollar from his $30 million campaign war chest."

The poll was conducted from Nov. 11-14 and surveyed 806 registered New York voters.
