Protesters Demand State Audit of Animal Shelter

Animal activists protested outside the Town of Hempstead Animal Shelter and have launched a letter-writing campaign.

The rain did not keep dozens of residents and animal rescuers from protesting outside the Town of Hempstead Animal Shelter last weekend.

Adults, children and even a few dogs marched outside the shelter in Wantagh on Feb. 5 to call attention to what they claim has become a "patronage mill," where those with ties to the Republican Party are making six-figure salaries while the animals inside are neglected.

They have brought their concerns before Town Supervisor Kate Murray and the board in the past and have now launched a letter-writing campaign to demand a state audit.

The Town has responded, saying some of those protesting have their own political agendas and have "hurled baseless and mean-spirited allegations against one of the finest animal shelters anywhere."
