Malverne Recognizes Retiring, Dedicated Public Servant

After 29 years serving under seven different mayors, Antoinette Sussman ("Toni" as she is known to most residents) is retiring from the Village of Malverne. 

At Wednesday's monthly village board meeting, Mayor Patricia Norris McDonald and the trustees recognized Sussman for her dedication and numerous years of service. Some of the former mayors who Sussman worked for were in attendance, including Louis Cocchi, Joseph Canzoneri, Anthony Panzarella, and Joseph Hennessy.

“You bring a crowd, it shows how much you are loved, admired and respected,” noted McDonald.

Sussman began her career as secretary to the board, and was appointed deputy clerk annually since 1997. Her responsibilities ranged from tax collecting, preparing board agendas for meetings, taking minutes, deputy register, and deputy records management officer.

“She has a generous spirit,” remarked Mayor McDonald.

She also worked behind the scenes at numerous events, including the Memorial Day Parade, Holiday Lighting, Arbor Day, September 11th Candlelight Ceremony and concert, and served on many volunteer boards.

She helped many residents, including seniors, who needed assistance filing exemption and community development funding forms. During Election Day, she can be seen assisting people vote at the Malverne Fire House from the start of the day till when polls close.

Former Mayor and current Deputy Mayor Joseph Hennessy remembered and joked about coming to Village Hall 19 years ago to start his term as mayor, and he had to go through Toni to get the keys for the office.

“You were a tremendous help, you taught us a lot as we came into the office not knowing all the fine tuning that had to get done in the background. You earned this retirement and I hope you have a happy and blessed one,” stated Hennessy.           

Sussman celebrated the recognition with her friends and family, including her grandchildren, sons, and daughters-in-law.

“I am deeply honored that my mayors are here, you have no idea how much they taught me. They taught me how to be a good public servant, how to help people and I will be eternally grateful,” she stated.

A grateful Sussmann added, “Thank you, my friends, for coming out tonight. For the past 29 and half years you have helped me.”

Following the village board meeting, a celebration was held for Sussmann at nearby Connolly Station.
