Residents Vote Down $21M RVC FD Bond

Resolution fails with 2,147 votes against.

Rockville Centre residents voted aagainst the $21 million Fire Department bond to rehab two of its firehouses, totaling 2,147 votes to 678.

Rockville Centre Fire Department officials wanted to close down Hose Company No. 1 on South Centre Avenue, merge its volunteers with , then raze the firehouse at 103 Maple Ave. — Eureka Hook, Ladder and Bucket Company No. 1 — and rebuild it. The reason, fire officials said, is because the buildings have fallen into disrepair.

The $21 million bond would also pay to renovate headquarters, and relocate the fire inspector's office to the firehouse on Maple Avenue.

Rockville Centre fire chief John Bushing said he was disappointed in the results, but will work to come up with other ways to make the needed renovations at department firehouses.

"Life goes on and we'll have to come up with something that is more acceptable to the residents of Rockville Centre," Bushing said. "We have to come up with alternatives. We'll be working on that now that we know where we stand and come up with a Plan B."

Want to save money? Have all volunteers compile their weekly beer money and you will have the money you need in no time! In addition, have the vollies wash their cars at home instead of at the FD( its not a public car wash) and there'syour savings right there! Problem solved, boys!

It's amazing to me how people just love to take jabs at the "volunteers". I bet you wouldn't care one bit about them washing cars when at 3am you or a family member is in need of life or death medical care that is free by the way. If you have an legit issue with the bond that is fine but there is no need to bad mouth your neighbors who are available to you 24/7. So what if they are washing a car or hanging around the firehouse with their brothers, if a call comes in then they can respond even faster. Be thankful we have them because long island would be a ghost town other than the trumps of the world because no one would be able to afford it. Try saying thank you to them instead of picking on them or better yet sign up to be one if you have the guts!

The postings gave clear-cut costs on building new (inflated in my opinion). The postings cited areas in need of repair, but did not list the costs to repair/replace. Punch lists are specific; they accurately define the problem and the solution, with costs. What I'm looking for is: Punch list Cost examples: Brick Repointing $ 5,000 new roof $30,000 new windows $30,000 new doors $30,000 new 300 amp $6,000 electrical service Handicap $10,000 Bath Handicap $5,000 ramp I believe the repair costs would be several millions less than building new. let's see those numbers.

I'm hoping he's just being facetious here. If not....

Good Grief. Have any of you been inside the firehouses?? Keep pouring time and money into sports fields but don't worry about the FD. Maybe try comparing our Firehouses to those in the surrounding areas. We should be embarrassed . 200 dollars a year wont hurt anyone! It shows just where our priorities lie. It is the cornerstone of safety for your village and if properly maintained could house many a youth and keep them active and productive in the community. My husband was a volunteer fireman for years while we were dating it served as a community center for classes for the community in first aide and a meeting place the young and old to socialize while benefiting the community. The Jr FD is a hidden treasure for the youth in this town . You people don't know opportunity when it looks you in the face.
