Malverne Pays Tribute to Jim Callahan's Life With Tree

Red oak planted in Westwood park to honor late Deputy Mayor Jim Callahan.

Nearly a year after Jim Callahan lives on in the warm memories that his friends and family hold onto, the legacy he left behind in Malverne and Nassau County and now, in the form a red oak that was planted Saturday morning in the village he called home.

The tree, located at the main entrance to in Westwood, was dedicated in Callahan's honor on April 28 as part of the village's annual Arbor Day celebration.

Jim's wife, Malverne Trustee Patricia Canzoneri-Callahan, and his four children, Thomas, Katherine, Elizabeth and Christina, were joined in the park by Malverne Mayor Patricia Norris McDonald, her fellow board members, and several other friends, family and local, town, state and county officials.

There, a ceremony was held to reflect on Jim's service to Malverne as its trustee and deputy mayor, and Nassau County, as its commissioner of Emergency Management, as well as the impact he had on others as a loving father, husband, son .... and friend.

Just as many people looked up to Jim during his lifetime, pretty soon they will be able to look up at this towering tree that was planted in his honor, which is expected to grow to up to 80 feet.
