VIDEO: Former NYC Mayor Swears in Malverne Officials

Ed Koch and County Executive Ed Mangano visit Malverne to administer oath of office to newly elected village leaders.

The excitement was so high it was almost tangible, as Malverne residents packed Village Hall Monday night.

They turned out to celebrate the start of another term for their newly re-elected mayor and village trustees, but also for the chance to meet - and perhaps snap a photo with the famous former New York City mayor and People's Court judge, Ed Koch.

Koch made the visit to Malverne to administer the oath of office to his long-time friend, Patricia Norris McDonald, as she started her second term as village mayor. He also swore in Trustee Michael Bailey for a second term, and spoke a few words about what it means to serve the people and what he's learned about the little village of Malverne.

The night was filled with pomp and circumstance and other well-known faces too, including Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano, who swore in Deputy Mayor James Callahan for his fourth term as trustee, New York City Police Commissioner Ray Kelly and Michael Palladino, president of the NYPD Detectives' Endowment Association.

The members of the NYPD Emerald Society Pipes and Drums opened and closed the ceremony with energetic performances, as did young Malvernite, Benjamin Truncale, who sang The National Anthem and God Bless America.

Following the ceremony, the village board held a meeting to appoint several residents to positions in the government.

(A story and full list of the appointments will be posted later on Patch.)
