Weigh in on Baseball Coach Salary Controversy

The arrest of Rusty Torres called attention to the salary he received from the Town of Oyster Bay. Was he paid too much?

The has sent shock waves through the area.

The North Massapequa resident is accused of two incidents of sex abuse involving an 8-year-old girl.

Torres is employed by the as a youth baseball coach and was suspended without pay Tuesday by Town Supervisor John Venditto.

It was a full time position according to officials, and that salary has raised a few eyebrows among some observers.

While in no way minimizing the seriousness of the allegations that are involved in Torres' arrest, we want to know what you think about the town's decision to hire a coach at that salary.

We're not asking you to decide Torres' innocence or guilt. That should be done in a court of law.

But we'd like to know if you think the town should have hired a coach at that salary.

Please take our poll below and weigh in with your comments.

Lets remember innocent until proven guilty. My problem is why is the town paying him $83,000 to be a coach. Are there any former Islanders on the town payroll? How about former Jets? There are hundreds of volunteer coaches in the community they all put in time and hard work. Let justice play out, if the charges are true, let him rot in jail. I also think an audit of the towns books are in order.

The lets see the time sheets. $40/hour is a bit high for a kids coach.

I did not play in the bigs. Played semi pro for four yrs till my leg decided to break. Taught high school ball for 4 yrs. Made 7200 total for those yrs. Was a great experiance. I did have a real job teaching jr. high. Didn't make big money at that either. What a great life!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I think this guy was over paid???
