West Hempstead Marine Reflects on Veterans' Sacrifices [Video]

Highlights from the 2012 West Hempstead Memorial Day parade and ceremony.

West Hempstead honored the men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice to protect their freedom Monday with a grand parade through the neighborhood.

A color guard of four U.S. Marines led the procession down Eagle Avenue, around Halls Pond and up Nassau Boulevard to Echo Park. Marching behind them were veterans, volunteer firefighters, local leaders, scouts and three riveting bands.

Residents lined the streets, waving American flags and taking in the sights and sounds of the Memorial Day celebration.

Once inside Echo Park though, the day took on a more somber tone as the community prayed and reflected upon the many soldiers who gave their lives.  Taps was played, the national anthem sung, and wreaths were placed at the foot of the veterans memorial inside the park.

The most memorable part of the ceremony was when one U.S. Marine, Albert Maldonado, of West Hempstead, shared his experiences of serving two tours in Iraq, where he was injured, and paid tribute to those who did not come home.
