11 Running for Malverne, West Hempstead School Boards

See who will be competing for a Board of Education seat in the May 15 elections.

Monday was the deadline for residents wishing to run for a seat on the Malverne or West Hempstead school boards to submit their nominating petitions. So now we can officially announce who the candidates will be for the May 15 elections.

Between the two school districts there are 11 people competing for a spot on their Board of Education. Here are the candidates.

Malverne

  • Two candidates will be running for Karen Aker's seat. (Aker is retiring when her term ends in June. This seat will be for a four year term.) They are and .
  • Three candidates will be running for Dr. Patrick Coonan's vacant seat. (Coonan resigned earlier this month. This seat will be for the three years that remain of his term.) They are Joann Krudis, Sherwyn Besson and Joey Bottita.

West Hempstead 

  • Board Vice President James Mariano will be running for re-election.  will be challenging him for his seat.
  • Trustee Carole Rilling will also be running for re-election. will be competing against her for the seat.

The school board and budget elections will take place May 15, from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. in West Hempstead and 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. in Malverne. Voting will be held in the district's respective middle schools.
