Budget for the Valley Stream 13 School District Passes

Malverne reisdents in District 13 went out to support the proposed budgets for the elementary school and high schools.

Residents in the Valley Stream School District 13 approved the proposed $42.5 million budget Tuesday night.

The budget was 2.89 percent higher than last year's, an increase of $42,538,261. It will cost the average household an extra $120 annually.

Nearly 2,000 residents went out to support the budget, include some from Malverne. It passed with 1,112 yes votes and 763 no votes.

School board incumbent Sean Douglas retained his seat. He earned 1,072 votes, while newcomer Bernadin Fleurima received 400 votes.

The budget for the Valley Stream Central High School District (VSCHSD) also passed with 1,943 yes votes and 1,341 no votes.

“We have one of the lowest tax levies in our area and we have preserved the programs that we offer,” stated VSCHSD Interim Superintendent Richard Marsh. The nearly $102 million budget has an increase under 2 percent.

There was also a vote for a capital reserve fund of $7,700,000 with a 10 year term that would go toward capital improvements within the Central High District. With 1,943 yes votes the capital reserve fund passed.
