East Rockaway Students to Compete on 'The Challenge'

192 high schools will compete for the title of Tri-State champion on the MSG Varsity show; East Rockaway takes on Mineola Sunday at 6:30 p.m. on Channel 14.

East Rockaway High School's brightest are ready to shine. The Rocks will take on Mineola HS on Sunday, Nov. 6 at 6:30 p.m. on MSG Varsity's popular quiz show "The Challenge."

“We’re proud to celebrate academics on MSG Varsity through ‘The Challenge’ and to provide these extremely bright students a platform to showcase their talents with their communities,” said Theresa Chillianis, MSG Varsity’s General Manager.

“The Challenge” includes 192 high schools from the entire tri-state area — Long Island (with Nassau and Suffolk as two distinct regions), the Bronx, Brooklyn, Westchester/Lower Hudson Valley, New Jersey and Connecticut. The program  showcases some of the brightest high school students in the region.

The East Rockaway team is comprised of: Mary Orzano (Advisor), Julia Koebert, Ron Perstin (Captain), Christopher Breidenbch, James Lukens and Dylan Radigan (Alternate).

The Mineola High School team is represented by Gaby Gonzales, Razvan Tohanean, Daniel Willis (Captain), Stephin Jose and Sujith Maracheril (Alternate). The academic advisers are Bob Goodwin and Bette Sloane.

This season, Long Island will be represented by 32 high schools from Nassau County and 32 high schools from Suffolk County. A new match-up can been seen every Sunday through Friday at 6:30 pm, on MSG Varsity, Cablevision’s iO TV, Channel 14. 

Participating schools advance through a series of elimination rounds, with one school in each region being crowned regional champion and winning $2,500 for their school. The winning teams from each region go on to “The Challenge” Championship where they square off in a Tri-State Showdown.

The school awarded the title of Tri-State Champion will receive $10,000 in prize money and each student participating in the final “Challenge” Championship game will receive $500.
