First Class Graduates Downing Primary School

Seconds graders make Malverne history as they move up to Davison Intermediate School.

They won't graduate high school until 2021, but second graders in Malverne became the first class to move up from the Maurice W. Downing Primary School, creating a little piece of local history.

In the past, Malverne elementary students were split across two different buildings in the school district - half went to Downing and half to Davison Avenue - but starting in the fall of 2010, the district restructured. They moved all Kindergarten through Grade 2 students into what is now known as the Downing Primary School, and Davison then housed all the third and fourth graders. The shuffling created more unity and collaboration among students and faculty.

On Thursday, the district held its first commencement ceremony for its second graders to send them off to the Davison Intermediate School. Also, leaving Downing with them is long-time teacher James Cornwell, who is retiring to his farm in upstate New York.
