You think your prom was unforgettable? Try comparing it to East Rockaway High School’s 2013 prom.
After suffering through the devastation of Hurricane Sandy, 230 students at the high school were treated to their dream prom by RentTheRunway.com last Thursday.
The school was chosen over dozens of schools affected by Hurricane Sandy, receiving the most votes in the contest. Student Molly Bastow wrote the essay nominating ERHS for the dream prom.
Students enjoyed an unforgettable evening featuring special acoustic guest performances by Jordin Sparks, singer-songwriter, actress and American Idol winner, and Darren Criss, musician, actor and star of Glee.
The event took place at the Sands Point Preserve, a castle-like venue. David Tutera, of the reality TV series “My Fair Wedding," transformed the estate into a Midsummer Night’s Dream theme.
In addition, students were treated to complimentary dresses from Rent the Runway, tuxedos from Men’s Wearhouse, shoes from Nine West, hair and makeup by Lancôme and Drybar, as well as plus size prom dresses by Sydney’s Closet.
To bring the theme to life, students were greeted by living trees, stilt walkers and ribbon dancers. They also enjoyed roaming entertainment throughout the night from an aerial bartender who poured sparkling cider upside down. to acrobats and contortionists.
When Hurricane Sandy hit the area, it hit East Rockaway High School especially hard. The school suffered about $10 million worth of damage in the storm, displacing students to an elementary school in Baldwin until April.
