Lady Rams Soccer Star Named Player of the Year

West Hempstead's Olivia Czavar recently earned Class A Player of the Year and All-State first team honors in her senior year.

West Hempstead girls soccer had the challenge during the 2011 season of competing in a Conference A-II field that included two of the top teams in the state - Island Trees and Clarke.

Despite the competition, one player stood out insurmountably. Lady Rams’ senior Olivia Czavar was recently named the New York State Class A Player of the Year. The award is determined annually by the New York State Sportswriters and Coaches Organization for Girls Sports (NYSSCOGS) and the New York State Sportswriters Association (NYSSWA).

“Olivia has been around for five years and has been a part of some good teams,” said head coach Michael Scaturro. “Over the course of the years, she has become a very demanding player and I’ve had some great years with her.”

Czavar, who started her career with the West Hempstead Chiefs Soccer Club, earned first-team All-State honors as one of the top forwards in the state. The senior scored 13 goals to go along with three assists during the 2011 season and tallied a season-high four goals in a 6-2 route of Floral Park on Sept. 20.

A varsity player since eighth grade, Czavar isn’t short on accolades and recognitions. Along with her latest achievements, as a junior in 2010, she earned New York State second team honors, Long Island second team honors, the Nassau County Player of the Year award and the Conference VI Player of the Year award. Czavar is also a three-time All-County player.

Although her statistics weren’t the largest numbers in the state, or even in Nassau County this year, the honors Czavar received represent far more than that. She controlled the pace of the game with her assertiveness up front and always kept the Lady Rams in it each time they set out onto the field. The awards take into account the intangibles, such as leadership, soccer intelligence and other essential factors not listed on a box score.

“She creates a lot of chances because of her movement on and off of the ball, and that is something that you really can’t teach. That is just one thing she brings to the table,” Scaturro added.

Czavar has also played on the Albertson SC Fury Premier, one of the most successful soccer clubs in the Eastern Region and received a scholarship to play college soccer next year at Adelphi University.

Congratulations to senior Olivia Czavar and the West Hempstead girls soccer program!
